Portrait of a Nation
|
|
Collected here from exhibits at the National Portrait Gallery in
Washington, D.C., the faces in this compact album are all part of
American history, each with its own brief essay. Here are the expected
formal portraits of founders and statesmen Thomas Jefferson painted by
Gilbert Stuart and Ben Franklin by Joseph Duplessis; Grant and Lee each
photographed by Mathew Brady, and Lincoln by Alexander Gardner; and
Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth by anonymous photographers. But
here too are whimsical, ironic, and popular images a poster featuring
Jack Johnson, Gertrude Stein sculpted in terra cotta, John Wayne in a
Remington-esque cowboy statuette, Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe, Elaine
de Kooning's vision of JFK, Ben Shahn's cartoon of Robert Oppenheimer,
a double portrait of Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes with
their feminist fists held high, and a painted wooden tableau of Rosa
Parks being arrested. |
