Rudolph Burckhardt: An Afternoon in AstoriaRudy Burckhardt (1914-99) was then son of a prominent Swiss industrialist from a distinguished family and began photographing daily life in New York in 1938. In February 1940 Rudy Burckhardt spent an afternoon in Astoria, Queens, photographing the streets of the neighborhood, its gas stations, cars, children at play and other everyday scenes. This album facsimile with a separately bound essay by Sarah Hermanson Meister, Associate Curator in the photography department of The Museum of Modern Art, discussing Burckhardt and specifically the groups of photographs he bound into albums for the pleasure of himself and his friends. Publication on the occasion of the opening of MoMA Queens 2002.
