The portraits of Native Americans collected in this striking volume were taken between 1908 and 1913 by photographer and self-promoter Joseph Dixon, on three expeditions sponsored by department store magnate John Wanamaker. Intended to document a vanishing race, much like Edward Curtis's more famous catalog, these remarkable photos differ from Curtis's in that they portray specific individuals, from Two Moons, a Northern Cheyenne chief who fought Custer at Little Big Horn, to young Annie Dodge (daughter of Henry Chee Dodge) who 50 years later would be awarded a Medal of Freedom by John F. Kennedy.
