Auguste Renoir

Auguste Renoir loved women. According to Patrick Bade's critical essay, this simple fact is the most important thing to know about Renoir's personality and his art. Bade makes use of the artist's frank interviews with his son, filmmaker Jean Renoir, and illustrates the book with such works as Bather Arranging Her Hair, The Sleeper, and Mother and Child. The compact monographs in this series focus on the work of major artists who often turned to women for their subjects, and also artists who primarily painted women as erotic or obsessive subjects. Each is illustrated with about 60 color and black and white reproductions and photos.
