Domon Ken (1909–1990), who moved to Tokyo at a young age and started out as a news photographer in 1933, made a lasting mark on photography’s legacy in Japan. Active during a period of war, reconstruction, and growth, he witnessed the rapid changes that took place across Japan and its society. He photographed people and their reality with intense passion and persistence, and also used a large-format camera to document the traditional culture and ancient temples that inspired him in his quest to capture the essence of being Japanese. This book appears on the 33rd anniversary of the opening of the Ken Domon Museum of Photography in his birthplace of Sakata, Yamagata.
