Zahlreiche Abbildungen stammen aus dem bislang ungeöffneten Künstlerarchiv und wurden von der Herausgeberin und Tochter des Künstlers Marie-Puck Broodthaers erstmals in dieser Form zusammengestellt. Im einem völlig neuen Umgang mit "Décor" und Objekten, Künstlerbüchern, Filmen, Graphiken und Schriften verkörperte Marcel Broodthaers während seiner zwölf Schaffensjahre von 1964 bis 1976 jenen Nachkriegskünstler, für den jede Form der Kunst sich in den Dienst neuer Ideenzusammenhänge stellen ließ.

Neben seiner Institutionskritik, für die er mit Musée d'Art Moderne, Département des Aigles Legendenstatus erlangte, umfasst sein Werk die berühmten Pastiches, seine ironisch-homorvollen Zitate von Künstlern und Autoren wie René Magritte, Charles Baudelaire oder Stéphane Mallarmé, die sprachphilosophischen Bilderrätsel und kunsthistorischen Analysen.
