Shahabuddin was born in 1950 at Dacca, in Bangladesh. The 1971 War of Independence in his homeland left great mark on him. As a hero of the liberation, his wartime memories are the driving force behind his work. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Dacca, Shahabuddin subsequently came to Paris, in 1974, to study at the École des Beaux-Arts. His work was exhibited in many national and international salons, and he was awarded the silver medal at the Olympiad of the Arts in Barcelona in 1992, in the category of French artist. In 2014, he was made Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his work as an artist in France. Shahabuddin’s works are constructed around movement. The artist does not represent the human body, but rather transcribes the muscular force into compositions that focus on legs as magical locomotive instruments that traverse the world. For him, muscular legs, translating physical effort, are also a symbol of surpassing oneself. In his work, the body appears to have been captured in mid flight—a veritable fusion between man and the space he is traversing.
